FALL 2012 LEARNING GOAL
Completed Goal StatementI would like to be fully versed on how the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) views using restraints before I begin my long term care (LTC) winter clinical placement in January 2013 using the strategies of my SMART goals analysis.
Competency Category
Professional Responsibility
Specific
I would like to be well versed on the Practice Standards that the CNO upholds on restraining clients, by reading and thoroughly understanding both the CNO Restraint Practice Standard and the Patient Restraints Minimization Act of 2001. As a nurse, I will have to deal with restraints at some point in time during my career so I feel that it is best to know what standards are expected of me under the CNO.
Measurable
I will measure my progress by reading and re-reading both the Restraint Practice Standard and the Patient Restraint Minimization Act until I understand it and I am able to easily summarize it to explain it with ease to another nursing student. This is meaningful to me as I have been in situations involving restraints and was not aware of what the proper course of action was.
Attainable
As I have briefly looked over the Restraint Practice Standard published by the CNO, I feel that I can incorporate reading a page each night into my homework schedule. As well, I believe that I can become well versed in both documents over the Christmas Holidays and be able to summarize it by the the second week of January 2013.
Relevant
This goal is relevant because at some point in time in my career I will end up in a position where restraints are used. It is important to know what guidelines there are and what actions are expected of me as a nurse. If I do not, improper procedures on my part may be damaging not only to myself but to the client as well.
Time Specific
My plan is to complete this goal by the second week of January 2013 before I start my winter clinical placement. This time frame gives me about two months to understand, be able to summarize and explain the CNO's Restraint Practice Standard and the Patient Restraint Minimization Act.
NURS 1020 CLINICAL LONG TERM CARE GOAL
Completed Goal StatementI would like to learn how to properly draw a bath and bathe a client diagnosed with dementia by April 2012 at the end of winter clinical placement using the strategies of my SMART goal analysis.
Competency Category
Knowledge Based Practice
Specific
I want to be able to draw a bath and bathe a client properly in my clinical LTC facility. This goal is significant in that bathing is a task that I will have to perform quite regularly as a novice nurse and as I grow into a more experienced nurse. It is important not only to know how to properly bathe a client but also how to maintain the highest quality of comfortability and the least amount of vulnerability for the client.
Measurable
I will measure my progress on my goal by drawing up four baths and bathing four clients with dementia- two men and two women. I will start by having someone else help me bathe clients and eventually work towards doing it on my own.
Attainable
I will be doing my clinical placement at a LTC facility approximately six hours a week for 10 weeks. I feel that drawing a bath and bathing four clients with dementia is attainable in that length of a shift and that long of a time frame.
Relevant
As a first year nursing student, it is reasonable to assume that I will be drawing up baths and bathing clients, especially in a LTC facility. It is a skill that all nursing students will need to master at some point in their career so I feel that I should master it as soon as possible.
Time Specific
I plan to have this goal completed by the end of my LTC clinical placement at the beginning of April 2012. I will have approximately three months to achieve my goal.
